OVERVIEW

Cajamarca is located in the highlands of northern Peru, found at 2,750m elevation. Situated in a peaceful valley, the town and the surrounding region is known for producing the best milk and cheese in Peru. Cajamarca is historically important and has been inhabited for over 2,000 years by various cultures including the Huacaloma, Layzón, Cumbe Mayo and Otuzco. The Incas later conquered the town and when the Spanish arrived, Cajamarca played a pivotal role in the Conquest.
