Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Peru has a new wonder after Machu Picchu! The Rainbow Mountain is only a recent find that is rivaling Machu Picchu in popularity when travelers visit the Cusco region of Peru! The enigmatic Rainbow Mountain also called Vinicunca, is the awe-inspiring, colorful, stripey mountain that decorates the mountains of the Peruvian Andes. It was not that long ago that Rainbow Mountain was covered by a glacier that approximately 10 years ago melted due to the effects of global warming, like many other glaciers in the region. In this case, natural magnificence was the result, exposing the spectacular Rainbow Mountain with its fine array of stripey rainbow colors, to the outside world. As well as being one of the most fascinatingly, stunning natural features of Peru, The Rainbow Mountain is also found at a really high elevation. It is essential to acclimatize before attempting the Rainbow Mountain hike as it is located at 5200 meters elevation ( 17, 060ft.). We recommend at least 2 days in Cusco before you attempt the enthralling  Rainbow Mountain Visit. See more on our blog about the Rainbow Mountain hike!

  • Elevation: 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level.

  • Duration: 3-4 hours approximately.

  • Distance: 7 km.

  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult, depending on fitness level

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain

Did you know that there is more than one Rainbow Mountain in Peru? The Rainbow Mountain of Palcoyo is actually a colorful collection of three stripey mountains collectively called Palcoyo.  Palcoyo is not a true mountain itself,  It is a viewpoint over a stunning valley in The Andes where you can witness THREE different rainbow mountains, which have nothing to do with the Famous Rainbow Mountain... confused? At Palcoyo, you can also appreciate a red valley,  a stone forest, and spectacular views of the sacred Ausangate mountain. Palcoyo is a lot less visited by travelers and you will rarely see another human there which adds to the incredible scenery of the region. If you are looking for a more remote, slightly lower, and lesser-visited magnificent alternative to the famous Rainbow Mountain, then Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains could be the better option for you!

  • Elevation: 4,900 meters (16076 ft) above sea level
  • Duration: 2-3 hours approximately.
  • Distance: 5 Km (3.1 miles)
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is the lesser-visited Rainbow Mountain in The Cusco Region!

The Ausangate Mountain range and Rainbow Mountain

Did you also know that you can combine a trek to The Vinicunca  Rainbow Mountain with the magnificent circular hike around the base of the Ausangate Mountain? If you are looking for a more challenging multi-day trek around the sacred Apu Ausangate mountain and also want to visit The Rainbow Mountain, you can combine both of them on a stunning, completely off-the-beaten-track, 7 day trek that also includes a transfer to Machu Picchu! The Ausangate trek with Rainbow Mountain is a high-altitude trek in the Vilcanota Mountain Range, near Cusco. The average altitude reached on this trek is over 4000m. Unlike most other Andean hikes in the region, The Ausangate with Rainbow Mountain trek is not so much about Inca archaeological sites, it is more about natural pristine Andean scenery, jagged mountain tops, dramatic and unusual landscapes, glaciers, rainbow mountains, glacial lakes, remote Andean communities, and of course, the sacred mountain itself, the Ausangate. The cultural aspect of trekking through remote Andean communities is an incredible experience, best appreciated in The Ausangate Mountain region. Learn more in our Ausangate Trek and Rainbow Mountain blog.  Your reward, for trekking in this region apart from the jaw-dropping views, are the natural Hot Springs towards the end of the trek. Your body will thank you eternally for a soak in these medicinal, muscle-relaxing waters as you gaze in awe at the sacred Apu Ausangate.  We also have a 10 day Ausangate and Rainbow mountain trek to Machu Picchu. This option includes acclimatization days in Cusco prior to the high-elevation trek..... this is essential for a carefree trekking experience in the Ausangate Mountain range. Remember this is remote trekking at it´s best and you will be quite some distance from any medical facilities, so acclimatization is a must!

  • Elevation: 5,100 meters (17,000 ft.) above sea level
  • Duration: 6-7  hours trekking each day approximately.
  • Distance: 73 Km (43 miles)
  • Difficulty: Challenging

What Causes the Different Colors of Rainbow Mountain?

The Rainbow Mountain is made up of 14 different, fantastically colored minerals. A true geological wonder is what you will witness! Rainbow Mountain was once covered by snow that has now melted permanently due to global warming; thus, its magnificent colors have been presented to the outside world.

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Peru Rainbow Mountains are situated in the Vilcanota Mountain range in the Cusco region. The Rainbow Mountain Peru is one of those places that you will remember for eternity. There are not very many natural places like it on the planet! Rainbow Mountain looks like something off the surface of Mars, only it’s set at a cloud-busting 3200 m /17,060ft. elevation in the Peruvian Andes. The most iconic image is of the Rainbow Mountain which the local people call Vinicunca, is the stripey rust-red, ochre, turquoise, and yellow mountain, made famous by Instagram. The whole Rainbow Mountain region is spectacular. There are a number of contrasting Rainbow Mountains standing out in the high Andes Vilcanota Range surrounded by a patchwork of rural alpaca farms and barren undulating rolling hills, dotted with glacial lakes and snow peaks. If nature is your thing, you have come to the right section of The Andes! Here is a chart to study the different elevations and distances that you will encounter on The Rainbow Mountain Day Tour.

Elevation and Distances on The Rainbow Mountain Tour

The Andes of Peru have their own microclimates which is an important factor when visiting the high elevations of Rainbow Mountain. The weather can make or break a Rainbow Mountain Trekking tour. Sunny days reveal the truly remarkable colors of The Rainbow Mountain, along with stunning panoramas of the dramatic Peruvian Andes. It is worth a mention not to expect the saturated vivid social media colors, however, and while a lot more muted, the Rainbow Mountain is still a sight for sore eyes. If it is cloudy when you visit Rainbow Mountain, it’s not uncommon for the whole mountain to be shrouded in a low mist and cloud cover. If you visit in rainy season from December to March, then you are sure to find not a Rainbow Mountain, but a White snow-covered mountain for your efforts. The best time to plan your Rainbow Mountain adventure is from May to September. There is a downside, however,  as you will be competing with the large crowds of up to 3,000 people each day, as these months happen to be high season in the Cusco region. Here is a weather and rainfall chart to see when the best time to visit is!

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain

The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour is a new Rainbow Mountain route that will take to not one, but three Rainbow Mountains, collectively known as Palcoyo. This" three-for-one" offer takes you away from the tourist crowds of the regular Rainbow Mountain (Vincunca). These Rainbow Mountains are very different yet all formed from colorful stripey rock formations, which are stunning in their own. However, the surrounding Red Valleys, and the views of the sacred Apu Ausangate make this a surreal otherworldly adventure, in the same mountain range as "the other" Rainbow Mountain! This hike departs from the same trailhead in a different direction than Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain and you will hike a lot shorter Trail with lower elevation and a lot fewer tour buses. Here is a table explaining the distances and elevations of The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains.

Elevation Gain and Distances on The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Trek

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains experience weather changes from one minute to the next. Usually, temperatures are between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, mainly due to the elevation. The weather is usually dry and sunny, but being in the Andes, you can experience a rain shower at any time! Palcoyo is in the same region of The Andes as The Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, and all be it at a slightly lower elevation, experiences very similar weather conditions to Rainbow Mountain. Generally, the best weather conditions in which to visit Palcoyo are between May and August. Try to avoid the months of December to March as it is rainy season. Palcoyo doesn´t even have a high season receiving very few visitors, which makes it an attractive option for those looking to escape the crowds and those looking for a shorter hike. Here is a breakdown of the rainfall and temperatures at Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain.
