Posada Amazonas is a wonderful jungle lodge located inside the private communal reserve of the Ese Eja Native Community of Infierno. It’s also right next to the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Being in a perfect location is not the only thing that Posada Amazonas offers. A whole range of excursions is available, with experienced and bilingual jungle guides who can teach you everything about the rainforest. And when you’re not out exploring the rivers and rainforest, you can relax at the beautiful lodge, swinging in your locally-made hammock, getting an Amazonian massage, or drinking rainforest-inspired cocktails in the Ronsoco Bar.
Note: The Posada Amazonas has a sister lodge called Refugio Amazonas, also located on the Rio Tambopata and not far from Posada Amazonas. A similar itinerary can be found at both lodges along The Tambopata River!
*Activities at both of these lodges are completely optional so that you can take as easy or as active as you like!

Day 1:Your Amazon Adventure Begins!
Your Peru Amazon adventure begins when we pick you up from the airport in Puerto Maldonado. We’ll then drive for 10 minutes to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. If you have any luggage that you won’t need during the next few days, you can safely leave it here, which will help keep the boats and cargo light.
We’ll then drive to the Tambopata River Port, entering the native community of Infierno. From here it’s a beautiful 45-minute boat ride to Posada Amazonas in the community’s primary forest reserve. On arrival at the lodge, the manager will welcome you and give you important navigation and security tips.
After you’ve had lunch and settled in, we’ll head off on a 20-minute walk from Posada Amazonas that leads to the 35-meter canopy tower. From the platforms above, you’ll have spectacular views of the vast expanse of rainforest, with the Tambopata River winding through it. You’ll also see toucans, parrots, and macaws as they fly over the jungle, with many other birds in the treetops right next to you.
Returning to the lodge, we’ll have a delicious dinner and you can watch the nightly presentation about the Infierno ecotourism project, given by a local staff member.
*Activities at both of these lodges are completely optional so that you can take as easy or as active as you like!
*All activities and excursions are subject to change according to weather conditions and seasons.

Day 2:Macaw Claylick, Lake Condenado and Night Walk
Today we’ll head to a wonderful parrot clay lick, which is only a 20-minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a hide located about 20 meters away, you will see dozens of colorful parrots and parakeets as they come to ingest the clay on the river bank, which contains important minerals. Species you can see here include southern mealy parrots, yellow-headed Amazon parrots, blue-headed parrots, and dusky-headed parakeets. The clay lick is most active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoons. We’ll head back to the lodge and then set off on our second adventure of the day, a two-hour trek to see the largest tree in the area: the giant Ceiba tree. During the hike, your guide will tell you more about the natural history of the rainforest and its principal taxonomic groups, and point out many of the incredible plants that grow in this ecosystem.
You can navigate around Lake Condenado, looking for wildlife such as the hoatzin or Shansho, which is said to be a pre-historic bird! Alligators, Martin fishermen among other species, if we are lucky will be able to observe a family of otters that inhabit its waters and are difficult to see. You will be able to discover the difference between the ecosystem of a lake and a river and who knows, maybe you will be rewarded with macaws flying over the treetops.

After dinner, you will have the option of taking a night walk through the jungle when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as strange as their natural stories.

Day 3:Brazil Nut Forest and Overlook Walk
After breakfast, we’ll set off on a short hike to a beautiful old-growth patch of Brazil nut forest. This location has been harvested for decades, if not centuries, and you can see the remains of a harvesting camp that is used two months a year by Brazil nut gatherers. Here your local guide will explain the entire harvesting and production process of the rainforest's only sustainably harvested product, from collection through transportation to drying. This is one of the main sources of income for the local population of Puerto Maldonado, making it one of the sustainable activities with the greatest impact.
After lunch, at the lodge, we’ll set off along a two kilometer trail to the banks of the Tambopata River. Here we will see the distinction between terra firme forest (rainforest that is not inundated by flooded rivers) and secondary forest, as the trail takes us through both habitats. We’ll also have great views along the Tambopata River.
Afterwards, we’ll head back to the lodge to relax and have dinner on what is, unfortunately, our final night at Posada Amazonas.

After breakfast, it will be time to make our return journey to Puerto Maldonado. We’ll head back to the Tambopata River Port and then continue to the city. When we arrive in Puerto Maldonado, we’ll take you to the airport or to your hotel. We hope you enjoyed your wonderful experience at the Posada Amazonas in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest!
