Trip Overview
Lake Titicaca is a beautiful freshwater lake that straddles the border between Bolivia and Peru. It’s a mystical place, and according to legend it was here that the Inca civilization was born. And at the heart of many of these legends lies Isla del Sol, the “Island of the Sun,” the largest island in Lake Titicaca. And this is the first destination on our two-day tour, as we explore the island before moving on to small indigenous communities around the lake, to see what life is really like around the high-altitude, windswept and stunning waters of Lake Titicaca.
Day by day schedule
Day 1:Copacabana to Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol
We begin our day early in the morning with an overland transfer from La Paz to Copacabana, where we’ll briefly visit the Sanctuary of Copacabana. Then we’ll go to the shores of Lake Titicaca and board a catamaran cruise ship to sail towards Isla del Sol (Sun Island), the mythical birthplace of the Inca civilization. When we arrive on Isla del Sol, Bolivia, you can explore the Inca Garden, and the Inca Steps and Fountain, followed by the Inti Wata Cultural Complex. The complex includes the Ekako Underground Museum, which contains numerous archaeological pieces found on the island. It is also home to some ancient mummies and a clay Ekako, the God of Abundance, as well as areas dedicated to traditional medicine, the Titicaca reed shipbuilders, the agricultural Inca terraces and more. You’ll also be able to see some Andean camelids. Our time at the Inti Wata Cultural Complex also includes a unique sailing experience on a large traditional reed vessel, which will take us on a panoramic tour of the Pilkokaina Inca Palace.
Afterwards, we’ll return to the catamaran to enjoy a buffet lunch on board, while gazing out over the beautiful Lake Titicaca. We then head to the port at Chua, where we’ll have a short walk to visit a traditional home. This is the home of an elderly lady who has spent her life on the islands of Titicaca, and meeting her, and seeing how she lives, provides a fascinating glimpse into the real lives of the Aymara people of Lake Titicaca and the altiplano. At night, we’ll have dinner on board before. Then you can relax in your double cabin with exterior views and a private bathroom, to peacefully drift off to sleep to the sounds of Lake Titicaca.
- Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2:Communities of Pariti, Kalauta and Pata Patani
We’ll have breakfast on board the catamaran before continuing our voyage on Lake Titicaca. First we’ll head to the Andean communities of Pariti, Kalauta and Patapatani, located on the shores of the smaller portion of the lake known as Wiñay Marca.
First we’ll stop at Pariti Island, a mystical place with a powerful connection to the region’s ancient history. When local people began finding ceramic pieces while plowing and working the land, their discoveries caught the attention of archaeologists. The archaeologists came and began to explore the island further, and their digs turned up numerous artifacts, including pieces of fine ceramics. These were dated, and discovered to be from the Tiwanaku civilization, which existed in the Titicaca Basin from around 550 to 1000 AD. Intriguingly, some ceramic figures were representations of wildlife such as tigers and monkeys, indicating that Pariti was perhaps once a ceremonial site, visited by people from beyond the Andes and as far as the jungle. All of these artifacts are displayed at the Pariti Museum, which we will visit during our tour.
After Pariti we will continue on to Kalauta. Here you’ll have the chance to row a traditional fishing boat through the totorales (reed plants) that grow here, and which are used to make boats of all sizes. Kalauta is also home to large number of funeral towers, built when Kalauta was an ancient stone town and one of the largest pre-Hispanic necropolises. Here we’ll have a snack before moving on.
Our final destination is Pata Patani, where the locals welcomes tourists at the port by handing them handmade garlands of flowers. The locals will probably try to get you to dance with them as they play their traditional instruments, so don’t be shy and join in! The community here is very much rooted in its ancient traditions, and fishing remains the main occupation of the villagers. After the singing and dancing, we’ll visit the Pata Patani Museum, which takes care of one of the oldest and best-preserved Andean mummies, called Tani.
This marks the end of our exploration of Lake Titicaca. We’ll head back to the catamaran for a tasty buffet lunch as we make our way back across Lake Titicaca. Once we reach the shore, we’ll head back overland to La Paz
