OVERVIEW

Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, at an altitude of 3,830 m. The surrounding scenery is spectacularly rugged with this mystical lake marking border of Peru and Bolivia. Legend states that Lake Titicaca was the birthplace of the Inca civilization, when Manco Cápac was raised from its depths, by the sun god Inti. The Folk Capital of Peru maintains many cultural and artistic traditions, especially the colourful dances and costumes, typical of the Quechua and Aymara people and epitomized at the annual Virgen de la Candelaria Festival.
