Maps, Altitudes, Weather and Practical Information
+A journey to Peru is the trip of a lifetime. So it is a good idea to prepare yourself properly. The experiences will actually leave you speechless!
The Different Regions of Peru
Peru is generally divided into 3 distinct regions, the Coast, the Andes and the Jungle. First up are dramatic mountain landscapes of extraordinary scenic proportions in he Andes. Cusco the Inca Capital and the magical machu Picchu, and the highest navigable lake in the world, can all be found in the Andes of Peru. The coast is home to the capital, Lima, known for its world-class cuisine and some of the best surfingonthe planet along the Pacific Ocean coastline. The North of Peru is hot all year round with virtually untouched virgin beaches. The pre Inca civilizations such as the Chimu, the moche and the old civilization known to man, Caral are all found on the coast, and are fascinating to visit. Then there is the immense Amazon Rainforest occupying 60% of Peru´s geography. Highlighs include Iquitos in the North and Madre de Dios in the South. This largely unvisited region is home to ancient tribes, and animal and plant species unique to this part of the worrd. Enjoy an Amazon cruise in the North or an immersive ecolodge in Manu national park stay to explore the creatures and habitats of the Peruvian jungle. It is exactly this diversity tha encourages travelers to explore Peru. A country that has somethng for everyone and adventure around every corner.
The Weather in Peru
The weather on your tour generally depends on the season and exactly where you are traveling in Peru. In the Andes, April to September is the dry season. November to February is the rainy season. March and October are considered the shoulder seasons. This means the climate can be really unpredictable. Peru is in the southern hemisphere, so when it's summer in the USA and Europe, it is winter in Peru. June to August are the peak winter months in Peru, and November to February is summer. The rainy season in the Andes actually falls during the summer months. So although there are warmer temperatures, the weather is wet. Weather patterns have become more variable in the past few years. This is why we recommend that you prepare for sun and rain all year round. The Northern coast is hot all year round and as you head south, Lima has a defined (cold ) winter from June to August with milder hot weather December to March. The good news is depsite the low hanging sea mist, it rarely rains! The jungle is wet most of the year with winter (June to August) receiving the least rain. The temperatures are however hot, hot hot, so the rain is more of a welcome break than a nuisance! Here are weather chars for the different regions of Peru.
The Altitude in Peru
Machu Picchu is located at an elevation of 2,430 m / 7,972 feet above sea level in the Peruvian Andes. Cusco is found at 3390 meters / 9,842ft. altitude. Lake Titicaca is found at 3800 meters /12, 467 ft and Rainbow mountain is at a whopping 5030 meters / 16502 ft. So the Andes is a high altitude region with massive variations within its borders. The Amazon Rainforest is at sea level however the cloud forests can be found at higher elevations. The coast is the coast, so found at sea level, bu worth mentioning when factoring the elevation gain if you head directly to Cusco to visit Machu Picchu! That is a jump of 3400 meters and can be a shock to the body! Altitude sickness is a thing, so try and ascend gradually if possible. Here is a breakdown of the different elevations in Peru.

Climate Change In The Cusco Region
Peru is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It has caused glacial melting in the Andes and other extreme weather events. Raising awareness about climate change is essential for mitigating these effects. It also aids in adaptation to new challenges. Remember, the famous Rainbow Mountain has only recently been discovered! This is due to the snow caps melting at this high elevation of the Ausangate Mountain Range. Previously, it was covered in snow. The Inca Trail is also affected by global warming. This causes higher rivers due to the surrounding icecaps melting.

Not only for people on their excursions, but also for the local communities. This is why it is important to use sustainable practices. These include adequate disposal of garbage. Remember to use the "packing in, packing out" philosophy on your tours.
