Despite sustaining significant earthquake damage in 2007, the city of Ica in southern Peru has plenty of charm and numerous attractions. For a city surrounded by desert, it may seem surprising that Ica and the surrounding region produce such large quantities of asparagus, cotton, and fruits, not to mention its status as the premier grape-growing and pisco-making region in Peru.

Our Half-day Ica city tour will take you to all the most interesting spots in and just outside the city. We’ll visit the Regional Museum, one of the best museums on the south coast of Peru. We’ll also get a firsthand look at the region’s produce, with a trip to a wonderful artisanal winery where we will receive a detailed explanation of the production of wine and pisco, followed by a tasting, of course!

To top it off, we’ll visit the Huacachina Lagoon, the famous oasis village surrounded by huge sand dunes, eucalyptus, palm trees and huarango trees.

Recommended:
Here, there is the option to ride the dunes in a Polaris dune buggy and slide down them on a sandboard. (Not Included).

If you want to see even more of Ica, take a look at our available extensions after our main city tour itinerary.

Ica City Tour

Our Ica city tour begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Ica or the immediate surroundings. First we’ll head to downtown Ica, where your guide will tell a bit about the city and its history. Then we’ll head to the Regional Museum, which houses a large amount of archaeological artefacts from civilizations that once ruled this part of Peru. We’ll see many fine ceramics, as well as some mummies, from cultures such as the Paracas, Nasca, Wari and the Incas.

Next we’ll head to the magical Huacachina Lagoon, sometimes called “The Oasis of America.” This pretty village is surrounded by a spectacular landscape of dunes, with the shining lagoon sitting in this otherwise arid location. The greenish water comes from a subterranean spring, creating a literal oasis. Apart from being a relaxed place to stay, Huacachina is also famous for two adrenalin-pumping activities: sand boarding and dune buggy rides, both of which are great fun! Sand boarding can be done by anyone in reasonable physical condition. Beginners tend to slide down the dunes on their stomachs, while more experienced sand boarders ride their boards in the same way as a snowboard.

Heading back towards Ica, we can stop off to visit a cotton plantation and an asparagus factory. Then we’ll have a treat for all you chocolate fans, as we visit Helena’s Chocolate Factory! Here we’ll see how they make the most famous regional sweets, such as tejas and chocotejas. Of course, you’ll be able to try and buy these tasty candies.

Next we’ll take a tour of a large winery about 15 km from Ica. Here we can tour the modern production facilities and see how modern technology has replaced the traditional methods of making and conserving wine and pisco. At the end of our tour, we’ll have a wine- and pisco-tasting session. Then we’ll take you back to your hotel, where you can relax after all the chocolates and wine.
