For those people who have booked their Machu Picchu tour package and want to climb Machu Picchu Mountain, we can offer this optional climb on top of your regular Machu Picchu tour. (depending on availability). This is an excellent option if there are no Huayna Picchu Mountain permits available. The hike is not as steep with no sheer drops as long as you keep to the designated trail. Vertigo sufferers are better off choosing the Machu Picchu Mountain option, exactly for this reason!
For many people, climbing Machu Picchu Mountain is one of the highlights of their Machu Picchu tour. Machu Picchu Mountain is the mountain that rises up behind the archaeological site. This is a steep yet rewarding climb up the trail and you can enjoy the incredible views of Machu Picchu below and the surrounding valley.
Often overshadowed by the other mountain inside Machu Picchu - the famous, conical Huayna Picchu Mountain, this spectacular mountain hike is included on the circuit 1A of Machu Picchu, which will take you to the higher elevations of the Inca archaeological site. Don´t worry, you are given extra time inside the ancient citadel if you choose this option!
Machu Picchu Mountain offers the highest vantage point from which to observe the iconic Inca Citadel and its surroundings. This challenging hike rewards trekkers with breathtaking vistas of the Peruvian Andes, deep valleys, and the ancient architecture that unfolds below. At an elevation of 3,082 meters above sea level, reaching the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain is an accomplishment that will be etched in your memory forever. You can see the Urubamba River winding through the valley below, cutting through, peacefully the surrounding rugged landscape. All around you are steep cliff faces and hillsides adorned with Inca terraces, an excellent example of Inca engineering and ingenuity still existing today. On a clear day, from the top, you can see the final sections of the Classic Inca Trail, the sacred Apu Salkantay, Huayna Picchu Mountain, and even Putucusi Mountain. You will also gain a unique perspective of Machu Picchu, from a different angle, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Machu Picchu Mountain, it should be mentioned, is no walk in the park! The high altitude, unpredictable weather conditions, and steep trails certainly offer their challenges. The trail is physically demanding, so a good fitness level is essential, as well as adequate acclimatization to the altitude to avoid any altitude-related issues. The stone steps are uneven and can be slippery, especially during the wet season (December to March). So adequate footwear is essential. Having said this, with the right preparation and respect for the surrounding environment, this hike is safely enjoyed by many visitors each day. The extra bonus is that there is generally availability, as long as you reserve the Machu Picchu Mountain in advance.
This hike is for those people who want to do more hiking inside Machu Picchu and is an add-on service to the general Machu Picchu ticket.

Machu Picchu Mountain Climb
The trek up Machu Picchu Mountain, on the opposite side of the ridge from Huayna Picchu, is not as popular but offers some of the most magnificent panoramic views of Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu in the background, and the Vilcanota River below. The Incas probably used this mountaintop as a lookout point to warn of potential invaders, as it offers 360-degree views across the surrounding landscape.
After your Machu Picchu tour package and guided tour, extend your adventure with an exhilarating climb up The Machu Picchu Mountain. rises high behind the ancient city, offers a challenging yet rewarding hike, with outstanding views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding Andes. The trek up to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. It’s quite challenging, but despite being longer than Huayna Picchu it is not quite as steep. It still has some quite exposed sections but is more suitable for anyone who doesn’t like heights. On the way up, you’ll see a wide array of local flora, including orchids, of which there are around 425 species at Machu Picchu. For nature lovers, this is arguably a better trek than Huayna Picchu.
Because there are limited daily permits, be sure to reserve the Machu Picchu mountain climb in advance, so that we purchase the correct ticket for your combined Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu adventure to make the most of your visit to this iconic historical Inca site.
