Day 1:Arriving at Ceiba Tops and a Walk in the Rainforest

We will pick you up from the Iquitos Airport or your hotel, and after a quick tour of Iquitos City, we’ll head to the Explorama dock to board our boat to The Ceiba Tops Lodge. We’ll then head off on a 40 km boat ride down the Amazon River to Ceiba Tops. After settling in and seeing the grounds and facilities, we will enjoy lunch. We will then head out on an afternoon hike in this beautiful primary rainforest reserve that surrounds the Lodge, with many huge trees bedecked with epiphytes, and “air plants” that grow in the trees!

After a tasty dinner, your guide will take you on a short walk to a small lake where you can see caiman. You’ll also hear the cacophony of jungle sounds that begin after dark. This sound made by insects, frogs, and other creatures who call the rainforest home will serenade you each evening as you sleep in the middle of the rainforest.

Day 2:Explorama Lodge

Ceiba Tops Lodge
Ceiba Tops Lodge

Early in the morning, before the heat of the day, we will head out on a birding excursion. This is the best time to spot certain species. After breakfast,  we will board our small boats to continue down the Amazon River to the rustic Explorama Lodge and hike the "Bushmaster Trail". This is where scientific studies by the Missouri Botanical Gardens have found the world's highest biodiversity of trees per square hectare. We will then continue on a visit to a small indigenous village of The Yagua Indians. Here, your guide will explain all about their culture and how it has been affected by the passing of time. There will be an opportunity to trade for or purchase some of their local handmade crafts. You can also take part in a demonstration of the blowgun which some of the Yagua elders still use today for hunting. After lunch, we walk along an Amazon River trail stopping at a "ribereños" house, corner store, and sugar cane rum factory. After this action-packed day, we will then return by our boat to The Ceiba Tops Lodge.

Day 3:Monkey Island and Pink Dolphin Spotting!

Ceiba Tops Lodge
Ceiba Tops Lodge

Early in the morning, we will head out on a birding excursion. We will head back to the Lodge for breakfast before we begin our morning boat excursion to "Monkey Island". YThis is a private reserve where more than five species of tropical primates including small Tamarins, Saki, Titi, and Large Woolly Monkeys are protected.

After lunch, we will spend the afternoon on a boating excursion in search of sloths, usually found in Cecropia trees at the water's edge, and the two species of freshwater river dolphin, pink and grey, found in Amazonian waters.  You can also go fishing, which is always interesting on the Amazon, a river that has more species of fish than the entire Atlantic Ocean. One of them, of course, is the notorious piranha, which isn’t nearly as ferocious as the movies would have you believe. Still, when you get one on the end of a line, you need to watch out for those snapping little teeth!

Weather permitting, we will enjoy a beautiful Amazon sunset on the river before we head back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 4:Canopy Walkway and Ethnobotanical Garden

Ceiba Tops Lodge

We will depart Ceiba Tops at sunrise, to travel by speedboat along the Amazon and Napo Rivers to the Amazon Rainforest Reserve and the ExplorNapo Lodge.  You will arrive just in time for breakfast! After breakfast, we’ll have a 45-minute hike in pristine rainforest until we reach the wonderful Canopy Walkway. The walkway is a suspended bridge spanning over 500 meters (one-third of a mile), connected by platforms in the trees and reaching a height of more than 35 meters (115 feet) above the ground. From this vantage point, we can see the Amazon Rainforest as few humans ever have, without any type of climbing skill or equipment, and suitable for all ages.

Afterwards we’ll have lunch at ExplorNapo and then visit the ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden. There are over 240 species of plants tended by a shaman and his assistants. These plants have a variety of uses, perhaps most importantly for their medicinal qualities. Your guide will translate as the shaman explains many of the qualities of these plants, and the important role they play in spiritual healing practices.

Afterwards, we’ll return to Ceiba Tops where you can relax and spend time in the pool before dinner.

Day 5:Boating or Hiking Activity and Return to Iquitos

On our final day, we will head out on a boating or walking excursion to enjoy the rainforest surrounding Ceiba Tops.  If you prefer, you can spend your time relaxing at the hammock house or enjoy the pool and Ceiba Tops gardens.

This marks the end of the wonderful Ceiba Tops experience. In the afternoon, we’ll take you back to Iquitos and either drop you off at the airport (if you have a flight to catch) or take you to your hotel. If your flight plans allow it, we can also take you somewhere for breakfast and/or lunch.

Note: Due to the ever-changing nature of the rainforest, the order of day-by-day activities is subject to change due to weather, as well as trail and river conditions.
