The Inkaterra Field Station is a jungle lodge resort on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. It’s located right next to the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. From here, you can explore the jungle by boat or on foot, traversing canopy walkways and venturing deep into the rainforest. Being an actual research station for guides and researchers, the lodge provides an enriching experience for natural lovers, students, and volunteers, and has a particular focus on interactive excursions inspired by conservation initiatives managed by the Inkaterra Association.
The Inkaerra Field Station Lodge itself is situated in its own 17,000-hectare private ecological reserve, where 540 bird species have been inventoried on the grounds. Its wooden cabañas, meanwhile, offer plenty of charm and comfort in the heart of the jungle, with a wonderful restaurant, lounge, and bar. Each day, you’ll have a tasty buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you can taste the incredible array of rainforest products from the Peruvian Amazon!

Day 1:Explore the Amazon!
Your Amazon adventure begins when we pick you up from your hotel or the airport in Puerto Maldonado. From here, we take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach the wonderful Inkaterra Field Station. After a short briefing, you can settle into your cabaña and then have lunch in the dining room.
In the afternoon, you can meet your highly experienced jungle guide and choose from the various excursions available at the lodge. You can head off on a guided walk along the rainforest trail system to explore the Amazon Basin, passing by incredible trees such as the Shihuahuaco and the strangler fig, and seeing huge numbers of colorful birds and exotic insects.
Later, you can go on the river night watch excursion, a guided boat ride on the Madre de Dios River. During the excursion, you can see the incredible change in the jungle as the sun sets and the nocturnal world comes alive. After dark, we can look for nightjars, owls, capybaras and big caimans. Returning to the lodge, you can then enjoy a delicious dinner in the main dining room. Afterwards, you can relax in your cabin or head out into the grounds to experience more of the rainforest and the cacophony of magnificent sounds of the Amazon Rainforest at night.

Day 2:Canopy Walk and Anaconda Walk (Optional Lake Sandoval)
After breakfast, we will explore the amazing Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and the Anaconda Walk. The Canopy Walkway takes us up a 29-meter-tall tower into the treetop realm. Stretching for more than a quarter of a mile, the walkway takes you through the canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. From this awe-inspiring vantage point, we’ll look out for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and the three-toed sloth.
After lunch, we will head to River Island This is a 20-minute boat ride to an uninhabited river island close to Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra where you can see the striking contrast of vegetation within the transition rainforest. We will pull up to the large sandbank island and walk through jungle trails on this floodplain which provides the island with an ecosystem rich in birdlife, including the Amazonian umbrella bird, one of the most sought-after species by birdwatchers.
*Optional: Sandoval Lake
The famous Lake Sandoval is found in the Tambopata National Reserve. We can take canoes out onto the beautiful Oxbow Lake, which is home to endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans, and other incredible animal species.

Today we’ll go for a hike across the wetlands using a walkway. This walkway traverses a 200-meter-long wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps, where we can see a huge array of amphibians, birds, mammals, trees, and other jungle flora. There’s also the possibility of spotting snakes – perhaps even the massive anaconda.
Next, we’ll visit our own organic bio-orchard to discover many of the Amazon rainforest’s tropical plants, where we’ll learn about their properties and medicinal uses by indigenous communities. Then we’ll visit our 30-hectare "Palmetum", a collection of 19 Amazonian palms in a plot reserved for rainforest restoration and conservation. Your guide will tell you all about these fascinating palms, including the yarina (vegetable ivory) and the walking palm, which cleverly moves its roots in search of sunlight.
In the evening, after dinner, we can venture on a night walk to discover some of the strange species of The Amazon Jungle, that come alive at nightfall in the rainforest. Wildlife activity greatly differs between day and night, as some creatures curl up and sleep while others employ ingenious adaption mechanisms to emerge. Stroll quietly as your senses heighten to the mysterious nocturnal sounds of birds, mammals, insects, and amphibians wandering by.

Next we’ll head out to the Gamitana Farm and Creek, located about 25 minutes by boat from the lodge. Here we can explore the rainforest, heading along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek. Wildlife is abundant in these waters and along the banks, where piranhas, caiman, turtles, and birds all live. At the farm, you’ll have a short guided tour, where you’ll see how the local farmers grow fruits and vegetables.
After dark we’ll head out on a wonderful nocturnal excursion to discover some of the strange species that come to life at night. Wildlife activity greatly differs between day and night, and we’ll hear the cacophony of mysterious nocturnal sounds of birds, mammals, insects, and amphibians as we walk close to them in the dark.
