The Chili River runs between the Misti and Chachani volcanoes in Arequipa, a pretty colonial city in southern Peru. It passes right through urban Arequipa as it winds its way from the snow-capped Andes to the Pacific Ocean. The river’s name comes from the word “chili” in the indigenous Aymara language, which means “rattle” – the sound the river makes as it drags stones along its course during its zigzagging route through the mountains.
For this river rafting experience, you don’t have to go far from the city to enjoy a fun half-day on the Chili River. The river is perfect for beginners, with enough thrills to get your adrenalin pumping without requiring any previous experience or technical ability. It also offers breathtaking views of the neighboring volcanoes Misti and Chachani. There’s nothing quite like looking up from the rapids to see a volcano looming up in the distance.
