In the Quechua worldview, everything in nature is alive, interconnected, and deserving of reciprocity (ayni). August is seen as a “hungry” month for the earth, when she needs to be fed spiritually to remain in balance.

Families and communities bury small gifts for the Pacha Mama, such as coca leaves, corn, wine, sweets, huayruros (sacred red and black seeds from the jungle), llama fat, and chicha (fermented corn beer).
